Paperback. Condizione: New. Artists and architects have long used sketches, notes, and sculptural models to explore or test new ideas and designs. But in the twentieth century, as Western art moved away from straightforward depictions of the natural world, models and prototypes began to evolve from preparatory steps in the creat…ive process to, increasingly, autonomous artworks. "Models and Prototypes", the companion publication to the Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum exhibition of the same name, draws on the works of modernist pioneers and major contemporary figures alike to explore how artists in a variety of media have redefined artistic practice by expanding the use of the model as a new visual force. Lavishly illustrated with dozens of pieces by such luminaries as Kandinsky, Duchamp, Joseph Beuys, Thomas Demand, and Jenny Holzer, "Models and Prototypes" also features a fascinating essay by curator Catharina Manchanda. Ultimately, this first volume in the museum's collection-based "Focus" series illuminates the centrality of models in contemporary art, asking why they remain so compelling as both tools and subjects.

Condizione: Muy bueno. Paperback. Condizione: New. *** FREE UPGRADE to Courier/Priority Shipping Upon Request *** - *** IN STOCK AND IMMEDIATELY AVAILABLE FOR SHIPMENT - Flawless copy, brand new, pristine, never opened -- 64 pp. ; 41 ills. -- with a bonus offer--; Models and Prototypes is the first exhibition in the Focus series, a collection-based se…ries of publications and exhibitions intended to examine significant works from the Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum's collection within the context of contemporary discourses. As a preparatory step, models have always occupied a special place in the context of artistic production. This changed in the twentieth century when many artists set out to redefine the parameters of art and artistic production. With new artistic objectives, structural and conceptual models emerged as complete and viable works of art in and of themselves. Beginning in the 1910s, the model â" conceived as a system defined by a set of rules â" became increasingly important, as did boxes, model-scale display cases, and architectural maquettes. Marcel Duchamp and many Conceptual artists of the 1960s radically challenged existing definitions of the artwork with the help of structural and conceptual models and the emergence of an emphasis on multiples. The centrality of models for contemporary artists, many of whom are also interested in social and historical issues, presses the question of why they became and remain such a compelling subject and tool. Models and Prototypes includes artwork by Mark Bennett, Joseph Beuys, Daniel Buren, Thomas Demand, Marcel Duchamp, Isa Genzken, Jenny Holzer, Wassily Kandinsky, Claus Oldenburg, Edward Ruscha, and Katrin Sigurdadottir, among others. Essay by curator Catharina Manchanda, Ph.D., Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum.
