From Wired, Nov 1994: Picture Dunitz.holding a paintbrush wired into a nearby power supply. Dipping this brush into an electrolyte mixture, he then attacks the surface of sheets of reactive metals. Electricity flows through the brush to the metal: by changing the voltage, he manipulates the layers of oxidation and, in turn, the colors.Intermittently, he etches grooves and scratches into the surface with a grinder or wire brush. But it's.the photography, that gives his work its shadows, turbulence, and dreamlike mystery. Using as many as 30 lights to illuminate one evocative image, Dunitz takes weeks to explore the pieces. 104 pages; 52 color photographic plates; 16.5 x 13.5 inches. Includes brief biography and bibliography; artist's notes; list of plates. Edition limited to 5000 copies. 96 pages.

Shipped with care. --- Published by Light Press in 1989, this volume gathers Jay Dunitz's photographic explorations of metal surfaces transformed through an unusual electrochemical process. Working with a paintbrush rewired to conduct electrical current, Dunitz applied water and direct current to sheets of steel and other metals, generating thin oxide films whose interference with light produced fleeting bands of color across the surface. He captured these transient effects on film before they faded, alongside compositions drawn from arrangements of discarded metal and treated steel. The resulting plates document an intersection of industrial material, chemistry, and optical phenomena. Signed by Author.
