First published in 1928, the book provides a first-hand, highly entertaining account of running the WS Ranch in the rugged New Mexico/Arizona border country during the late 19th century. The author shares incredible tales of the Wild Bunch and offers a fascinating account of unintentionally harboring the infamous Butch Cassidy. Written with a dry, droll British wit, French famously recounts his delight in secretly stealing his horses back after the notorious outlaw Black Jack had taken them. The memoir contains a vivid firsthand account of the famous siege of Elfego Baca, a legendary lawman who held off nearly 80 Texas cowboys single-handedly.
