When and where the maritime trade in oil products is discussed the name of the Shell Company and its tanker fleets will almost certainly be raised. The 1892 launch of the tanker Murex at Grey's Tyneside yard marked the conception of what became the Shell tanker enterprise, whose ships became a dominant player in oil transport. Stephen Howarth's history of this fleet for 100 years from 1882 produced what is actually a study of the evolution of taker design and the development of that trade. Even the birth of the fleet had its surprising aspect. Founder of the company, Marcus Samuel, had not owned any ship before the Murex was launched, he did, however, recognise that oil products were going to be a future important commodity and require specialised ships to meet the demand. His fisr ship was an early example of what would become the standard taker design and such was the accuracy of Samual's prediction that within two years of the launch of Murex nine sister ships had joined her and they were the foundation of the Shell fleet trading world wide. Howarth's account of the development of that shipping giant covers its early days, through two world wars, in which many Shell ships were lost, surviviing the mid-wars depression, the "oil shocks' of th 1970s and '80s to the day of the mega-tankers of more than 300,000dwt. An exceptional study of what was the world's largest tanker company and a compelling read for all those interested in this arm of the shipping industry.
