Paperback. Condizione: Very Good. 2. Pap. Minor shelf-wear to wraps, else a bright, clean copy. This is one of the very few texts which let us see how life was really lived in monasteries in the early Middle Ages. Written in Old English and preserved in a manuscript of the mid-eleventh century, it consists of 127 signs used by Anglo-Saxon monks during times when the Benedictine Rule forbade them to speak. These indicate the food the monks ate, the clothes they wore, and the books they used in church and chapter, as well as the tools they used in their daily life, and persons they might meet both in the monastery and outside. The text is printed here with a parallel translation. The introduction gives a summary of the background, both historical and textual, as well as a brief look at the later evidence for monastic sign language in England. Extensive notes provide details of textual relationships, explore problems of interpretation, and set out the historical implications of the text.

About the book >.>.> Monasteriales Indicia is a significant text that offers a rare glimpse into the daily life of monks during the early Middle Ages. Written in Old English and preserved within a mid-eleventh-century manuscript, this work comprises 127 symbols employed by Anglo-Saxon monks in accordance with the Benedictine Rule, which prohibited verbal communication. These signs illustrate various aspects of monastic life, including the food consumed, the clothing worn, the ecclesiastical texts read during services, the tools used in daily activities, and the individuals monks encountered both within and outside the monastery. Consequently, this text provides an intriguing insight into the experiences and circumstances of monastic life nearly a thousand years ago.Accompanied by a parallel translation, Monasteriales Indicia is accessible to non-specialists, allowing them to engage with the material and form their own conclusions. The introduction offers a concise overview of the text?s historical and contextual background, along with a consideration of later evidence pertaining to monastic sign language in England. Detailed notes enhance the reading experience by addressing textual relationships, interpreting challenges, and discussing the historical implications of the signs presented.Through its unique content and approach, Monasteriales Indicia serves not only as a scholarly resource but also as a bridge connecting contemporary readers with the lives of monks from a bygone era.
