Bound in is a compliments card from the United States Capitol Historical Society conveying on behalf of Marty and Joan LaVor this book as a thank you for the recipients service to the United States. In 1982, Marty LaVor turned his hobby into a career as a full-time freelance photojournalist. Since that time he has taken over one million photographs. He travels extensively and has photographed in over 100 countries, specializing in candid work. His photographs are used in newspapers, magazines, newsletters, corporate reports, political campaigns, posters and books. He has had 35 one-man exhibitions and his work is held in private collections throughout the world. LaVor's work has received many awards, most notable, the International Photographic Council of the United Nations "Leadership Award" and the prestigious Kodak Gallery award. He won the White House News Photographer's Association, the Southeast Professional Photographers Association's Picture of the Year award nine times and its Distinguished award eleven times, the Virginia Professional Photographers Association's Picture of the Year award nineteen times and the overall "Best in Show" twice in the East Texas International, and Photographer's Forum Magazine competitions. Inspired by a review by Geoff Earle observed on-line. Visitors by the thousands tour the Capitol each year. Invariably many miss some of its most extraordinary sights. To fully appreciate them one needs to be an optimist whose dictum is "things are looking up." Noted photographer Marty LaVor has highlighted many of the Capitol's hidden treasures with a book of his photography entitled, The Capitol, See It Again for the First Time, Looking Up. LaVor's forte is upward-looking photographs using appropriate lens, such as a fisheye lens. Sometimes, LaVor lets the Capitol's unique architecture and artistry speak for itself. Other times, LaVor's keen eye for geometry, light and reflection creates photographic works of art out of otherwise ordinary forms and shapes. With the right framing and lens, a staircase can become an abstract creation. LaVor shot the second-floor circular staircase near the Speaker's office from above, producing an effect like a snail's shell. LaVor shoots many of the Capitol's antique chandeliers. Sometimes, he includes an ornate mirror in the shot, creating a kaleidoscopic effect. The Capitol's Victorian lighting provides dark backgrounds to some of LaVor's views. Sometimes, he positions the corner of a room's ceiling at the center of his shot, disrupting the symmetry of antique moldings and light fixtures. For visitors who must endure quick tours that skip many of the Capitol's most decorative rooms, LaVor provides an insider's view. Some are usually seen only by members and lobbyists. For his ceiling shot of the room, used on the book's cover, LaVor held his camera against a mirror, doubling its historical frescoes. LaVor has had a longtime interest in the Capitol.
