Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - 'That Devil Wilkes' is a compelling biography of one of the most colorful and controversial figures in eighteenth-century British politics. John Wilkes, the radical journalist and politician, is brought to life in this detailed account of his turbulent career and his enduring impact on the concepts of individual liberty and freedom of the press. From his notorious publication, 'The North Briton', to his repeated expulsions from Parliament and his subsequent triumphs as Lord Mayor of London, Wilkes emerges as a champion of the common people against the entrenched power of the monarchy and the aristocracy. R. W. Postgate explores the dual nature of Wilkes-the witty, charismatic libertine and the principled reformer who famously challenged King George III. The narrative delves into the famous cry of 'Wilkes and Liberty!' that echoed through the streets of London, illustrating how his legal battles over general warrants and parliamentary privilege helped shape modern constitutional protections. This work provides a fascinating look at a man who was as much a devil to his enemies as he was a hero to his supporters, offering vital insights into the political ferment of the Georgian era. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.
