The breed was developed to be a scent hound with the primary focus of hunting foxes on their scent alone. The breed is known to have originated in the states of Maryland and Virginia, and is still the state dog of Virginia. The breed has a very musical and loud howl that can be heard for miles. The aided in the dogs desirability as a scent hound. However it also means that the American Foxhound is not suited well to city-living due to the fact that its howl is likely to disturb neighbors. The breed has a close, hard hound coat of a medium length. There are no standardized colorations for the American Foxhound as the breed was developed for practical hunting purposes rather than aesthetic purposes. However the most common coat colorations are: white, tan and black. The breed is known to be docile, affectionate and loving. They make perfect pets for households with small children and other small animals. The breed is known to be wary of strangers at first, but will warm up to people quickly. The breed is highly energetic and will need to be exercised properly to avoid them developing any destructive, hyper active, habits due to an abundance of energy.
