The ship was carrying over 150 passengers and crew members when it encountered a violent storm, causing it to capsize and sink. The author also explores the aftermath of the disaster, including the rescue efforts and the subsequent investigation into the causes of the sinking. The book is notable for its vivid descriptions of the storm and the chaos that ensued, as well as for its insights into the social and cultural context of the time.
