The story is based on the ancient Greek myth of Pyramus and Thisbe, two lovers who are forbidden to be together by their parents. They communicate through a crack in the wall between their houses and make plans to meet at a nearby tree. However, when Thisbe arrives first, she is frightened by a lion and drops her veil, which is torn apart by the animal. Pyramus arrives later, sees the torn veil, and assumes Thisbe has been killed. He then takes his own life, and when Thisbe returns and finds him dead, she also takes her own life.Chadwick's adaptation of the myth features a libretto that is written entirely in rhyme, adding a poetic and lyrical quality to the tragic story. The opera is divided into two acts and features a cast of characters including Pyramus, Thisbe, their parents, and a chorus. The music is composed in a traditional operatic style, featuring arias, duets, and ensemble pieces.Published in 1854, Pyramus and Thisbe was well-received by audiences and critics alike. It was praised for its poetic language, musical composition, and emotional depth. The opera has since become a popular choice for productions in both professional and amateur theaters. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
