Before Newtonâs breakthrough, the study of mathematics was a static one, but his work opened the door to the study of dynamic quantities and rates of change. The author contrasts Newtonâs method with more recent ones and ultimately determines that Newtonâs is superior, as it derives a mathematical law not from any actual change, but from the conditions contained in the algebraic formula by which the variable function is expressed. Exploring the rate and direction of change, the author argues that this approach forms the groundwork of the entire transcendental analysis and thereby provides clarity to a subject that was, in the authorâs opinion, unnecessarily shrouded in mystery.
