Often reliant on extensive collections of artifacts, these museums provide opportunities for collection-based research not commonly found in other institutions. The author emphasizes the importance of these collections as precious resources for science, housing specimens that can be reexamined and studied in new ways as technology and scientific understanding advance. Through examples from the Smithsonian, the author showcases the impact of museum research on our understanding of the natural world. The book highlights the importance of museums as partners in the broader research enterprise, contributing to fields such as ecology and systematics and underscoring the need for sustained funding and support to ensure the preservation and growth of these invaluable collections for future generations.
