This book examines the transition from the mercantile to the monometallic system, illuminating how it developed alongside the progress of commerce and the global flow of precious metals. The author argues that the monometallic system emerged as a defensive measure against currency manipulation, but that its implementation has stifled international trade by restricting the use of one of the two precious metals. The book proposes an international bullion-money system to rectify this issue, advocating for the coexistence of national monometallic currencies alongside an international bimetallic currency. This system would restore the free flow of precious metals, enhance international trade, and stabilize currency exchange rates. By delving into the historical evolution of monetary systems, this book offers a fresh perspective on the challenges and opportunities of international currency regulation.
