This book explores the historical development of literary criticism in the Renaissance era, particularly examining the influence of Italian humanism on the formation and evolution of classicism in modern European letters. The author traces the origins and causes of the classicist spirit in modern literature and reveals the sources of the rules and theories embodied in the neo-classicist literature of the 17th and 18th centuries. The book studies the works and ideas of major Renaissance critics like Dante, Petrarch, and Tasso, exploring the conflicts and convergences between neo-classicist and romantic elements in Italian criticism. Ultimately, the author demonstrates how the critical activity of Italian humanism laid the groundwork for the establishment of aesthetic foundations of literature and the restoration of beauty as a central tenet of art.
