The author presents an alphabetical listing of 80 soldiers killed in battle or from disease, wounds, and accidents; each entry includes the company and regiment in which they served, as well as biographical details and the circumstances of their deaths. The author reveals the deep impact of the war on this community, and their sacrifice would have been known to every resident. From the author's research, one in seven men from New Hampshire who enlisted did not return, and the author suggests this loss contributed to a decline in the population of Penacook. While the focus is on the lives lost, the author also includes biographical sketches of 71 soldiers who returned home after serving in various branches of the military to provide a full picture of the impact of the war effort on the town.
