This book studies the differences between two kinds of rural schools in Ohio and Michigan at the beginning of the 20th century: district schools, and the newer consolidated schools. The author focuses on analyzing economic, social, educational, and family data, with the intent to determine which school type is better for rural communities. Statistical tables present details about factors like nativity of farmers, mortgage indebtedness, and church and fraternal activities, with the intention of revealing the overall strengths and weaknesses of these small communities. The study goes on to examine school-related factors like travel distance for students, the quality of buildings, and teachers' salaries across the Ohio and Michigan schools.
