Established by French Huguenots in 1688, New Rochelle served as a refuge for religious dissidents seeking freedom from persecution. Originally named for the Huguenot stronghold of La Rochelle in France, this book shares the history of the settlement, abolitionist activity, and tales from its Dutch and English neighbors. From its origins to the 20th century, the account weaves together primary documents and anecdotes to highlight the formation and evolution of this city to become a reflection of its strong and diverse heritage.
