This book traces the development of the doctrine of Biblical Inspiration in the early Christian Church, from its roots in the Old Testament to its full expression in the work of the early Church fathers. The author examines the writings of Philo, Josephus, and the New Testament authors to show the development of the idea of the sacred character of the text, which led to an almost superstitious reverence for the letter of Holy Scripture. This mechanical view of inspiration assumed such disastrous proportions that the author thanks providence that no authoritative definition of inspiration was ever made.
