The young men were part of a growing Methodist movement, and their expulsion was a controversial event in the religious history of the University. The author examines the charges against the men, which included preaching and expounding in illicit conventicles, and holding and maintaining tenets contrary to the doctrine of the Church of England. The author also discusses the broader historical context of the Methodist movement, and the significance of the expulsion in terms of the relationship between the University and the Church of England. The book provides an insightful look at a fascinating and important chapter in the history of Oxford University.
