This richly detailed account chronicles the history of Vermont from 1765 to 1791 as its inhabitants negotiated their land claims and uncertain political status nestled between New Hampshire, New York, and the Canadian border during the Revolutionary War. The author draws on primary sources like personal letters, petitions to Congress, and official declarations to support the narrative, providing an in-depth exploration of the arguments used by Vermont settlers to justify their independence. The book also traces the steps taken by the new state to establish its sovereignty and forge alliances with other states and foreign powers. A unique contribution to the literature on the Revolutionary War and the development of the United States, this book sheds light on a little-known chapter of American history.
