The collection contains many high-quality works, including a cameo of Jupiter from the Augustan period, a portrait of Claudius believed to date from shortly after he became Emperor in AD41, and a series of portraits of Henry VIII and Elizabeth I. The book discusses the artistic merits of these works, explores their historical context, and suggests possible identities for the people depicted in the portraits. Through these objects, the author sheds light on the development of glyptic art and the role of precious jewels in Renaissance and Tudor courts. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.…
