Nearly free molecule solutions are useful for describing the flow field of a rarefied gas of infinite extent past an immersed body at large Knudsen number…, where the characteristic dimension is much larger than the mean free path of the gas. For a uniform flow past an immersed body, the flow field can be divided into an inner region and an outer region. The inner solution is asymptotically matched with the free molecule solution, while the outer solution is asymptotically matched with the inner solution. The inner and outer solutions are obtained by using a new integral formulation of the linearized Boltzmann equation. The theory is applied to the simple problem of a circular cylinder rotating in a rarefied gas, which is at rest at infinity. For this problem, the existence and uniqueness of the solution, as well as the Asymptoticity Theorem, can be proved. The results show that the inner and outer solutions obtained by the theory are indeed uniformly valid asymptotic solutions to the problem.
