This book traces the establishment and development of a subscription library in Hull, from its humble beginnings in the eighteenth century to its present status as a well-established institution. The author delves into the motivations and challenges faced by the founders, the role of a select group of individuals in its inception, and the evolution of the libraryâs collection and services over time. Through extensive research, the author provides a comprehensive account of the libraryâs history, capturing the spirit of intellectual curiosity and community engagement that drove its creation and sustained its growth. The book not only sheds light on the evolution of a specific cultural institution but also contributes to a richer understanding of the broader cultural and intellectual landscape of provincial towns in England during the period.
