Paperback. Condizione: New. Print on Demand. This book introduces a new method for analyzing hepatitis B surface antigens (HBsAg), using highly specific monoclonal antibodies to establish 'signatures' that categorize different strains of the virus. The author, an MIT Sloan School of Management professor, teamed up with medical doctors to develop statistical techniques to use these 'signatures' to categorize hepatitis B strains based on their antigenic structure. Prior to this, polyvalent anti-HBs antibodies were only able to identify broad categories of the virus, but this new method allows for much greater specificity, revealing a far more complex and diverse viral structure, both within and between known subtypes. Beyond the hepatitis B virus, the author suggests that this new technique may also be useful in studying the antigenic composition of other viral agents, such as polio, influenza, and herpes.
