This book delves into the growth of the religious epic before the great work of John Milton, Paradise Lost, with a specific focus on the impact of Abraham Cowley's Davideis. The author traces the evolution of the religious epic form, examining earlier works like Bishop Bale's Gods Promises, Hans Sachs' plays, and the influential Divine Weeks and Works of Guillaume de Saluste Du Bartas. The book explores the influence of these predecessors on Cowley's Davideis, analyzing its themes, characters, and style within the broader context of 17th-century religious poetry. Ultimately, this study sheds light on the development of a significant literary genre and the role of Cowley's epic in shaping its trajectory.
