This book presents research conducted over a five-year period focusing on the relationship between time pressure and performance in scientists and engineers. The author analyzed data from a survey of 117 people in a government laboratory in 1965 (Time 1) and 118 people in 1970 (Time 2…), 78 of whom had participated in 1965. Each scientist and engineer completed a questionnaire and had their performance evaluated by judges selected from among other professionals in the lab. Performance criteria included innovation, productivity, and usefulness. The author found that scientists and engineers who experienced more time pressure tended to perform better, and that this relationship was stronger for usefulness than for innovation or productivity. The author also found that scientists and engineers who wanted more time pressure tended to perform better. These findings suggest that time pressure can be a motivating factor for scientists and engineers, and that managers should take into account what pressures scientists feel are appropriate when setting pressure levels in their labs.
