This book investigates the behavior of plane pulses (a moving discontinuity surface behind which is a field varying in space and time) when they encounter parabolically shaped obstacles in their path. The author applies this problem to two specific shapes: a parabolic cylinder and a p…araboloid of revolution. By assuming the incident wave is polarized in a direction parallel to the cylinder's generators, the author solves two boundary value problems associated with each shape. The first problem assumes the electric vector polarization and zero normal derivative on the obstacle. The second assumes magnetic vector polarization and zero tangential derivative on the obstacle. Both problems are treated by separating variables in the time-dependent wave equation, solving the resulting integral equations using Laplace transforms, and obtaining Volterra integral equations that can be solved by iteration.
