This book takes an in-depth look at the two main methods of investigating the proper motions of stars: Kapteyn's method and Eddington's method. The author makes a theoretical study of Eddington's method with the purpose of finding out to what extent the method can be applied in practice. To investigate this, the author makes a comparison of the results obtained from Eddington's method with the results already published by other authors. These results show that the number of stars used in the investigation is 1,420; the antivertices for the two star streams explored in the study are found to be: Drift I: RA 275o, Decl. -16o; Drift II: RA 95o, Decl. -12o; the true vertices for these streams are found to be: Drift I: RA 55o, Decl. 25o; Drift II: RA 235o, Decl. 30o; and the velocity of the solar motion towards the center of gravity of the stars used in the computation is found to be 20 km/sec.
