The study involved the development of a novel method for measuring the temperatures of both surfaces of a boiler tube while the boiler was in ope…ration, enabling the authors to determine the temperature drop along the path of heat travel from the hot gases into the boiler water. The authors found that the temperature drop from the hot gases to the gas-side surface of the tube is high, whereas that through the metal of the tube itself and from the metal to the boiler water is low. This means that the metal of the boiler tube is nearly at the same temperature as the boiler water, indicating that as long as the boiler is kept free from scale, oil, or other deposit the tubes cannot be overheated, even if the boiler is operated far beyond its rated capacity. The book also includes discussions of radiation, convection, and conduction as they apply to heat transmission in boilers, as well as an overview of previous research on furnace wall heat losses and heat transfer in boilers.
