This book is a Victorian-era treasury of English verse, songs, and ballads by the authors of the era who contributed to Bentley's Miscellany over an 18-year period. A fascinating glimpse into the Victorian era, the book is an important resource for scholars of English literature and culture during Queen Victoria's reign. Including well-known names such as Father Prout and Lover, the collection also contains forgotten verse from writers of the day. The themes running through these diverse works from popular and literary writers of the time demonstrate the social and political concerns of the era. Of particular interest is the broad perspective provided by the number of authors whose divergent viewpoints and backgrounds ensured a full and fascinating kaleidoscope of Victorian-era thought. The ballads, verse, and songs cover an array of themes, providing insight into the socio-political concerns and popular cultural obsessions of the day. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.…
