It starts by reviewing methods of protective inoculation that had been attempted before the book was written, such as subcutaneous injections and ingestion of killed cholera bacteria. Then, the author shares the results of their own experiments with cholera inoculation using dead and live bacteria, with various strains of cholera bacteria, and with different methods of inoculation. The author concludes that no satisfactory form of protective inoculation against cholera had yet been established, but that subcutaneous injection of dead bacteria produced a less severe local reaction than live bacteria.
