This book examines slavery's abolition in the British Empire and its aftermath, focusing on the period between the 1823 resolution for "measures of amelioration" in slave colonies and the formal abolition of slavery in 1834. The author thoroughly analyzes the effectiveness of parliamentary measures and policies in improving the conditions of enslaved Africans in the Caribbean colonies, and appraises the government's and planters' responses to these new policies. The book also discusses the amelioration period within the broader context of British history and the abolition of the transatlantic slave trade, and explores the challenges freed slaves faced after emancipation and the significance of their agency in shaping the post-slavery Caribbean society. This in-depth study unveils the complexities of this transformative period in British imperial and Caribbean history.
