The author sought to dispel the impression prevalent in England that such a system must be either secta…rian or irreligious. Through a series of interviews conducted with prominent New England statesmen and authors, the author demonstrates that religious instruction in Sunday schools and at home, combined with the teachings of the local clergy, was widespread in the region and was unaffected by the existence of free common schools. In fact, the author argues that the system of free common schools in New England indirectly favors the cultivation of religious sentiment and the promotion of morality, as it provides a structured environment in which children learn the importance of character and the value of good behavior. Ultimately, the book concludes that religious instruction and free, universal education are not mutually exclusive, and the New England model provides an example of how both can coexist to the benefit of society.
