This book brings together 11 texts to consider the implications of the theatrical event of the French Revolution, offering an interpretative exploration of its historical and symbolic significance. Exploring the style of theatrical performances during the Revolution and employing a thematic framework, the author engages with issues and concepts such as playwriting, acting, audience, and socio-cultural contexts of spectatorship, demonstrating how theatre both mirrored and influenced the tumultuous change of the period. The author argues that the revolutionary festivals did not illustrate but rather instigated a new set of social beliefs, revealing the extent to which the Revolution organized collective emotions and reconfigured subjective experience.
