The author made a study of 107 graduate engineers who had been employed by a large electric manufacturing company during the first year that the new method recommended in this book had been used. The author found that the results of the test would have classified seventy percent of the men correctly on the day that they were employed. Significant ability in a particular line of work is determined by both general ability or intelligence directed by interest and additionally, special abilities which vary independently, which are neither general intelligence nor are they necessarily correlated with a general average of these. The study concludes that interest is not an indication of a special ability in a particular line of work. Therefore, occupational descriptions and analyses of the jobs to be filled are necessary so that specifications for the kind of person who will most nearly meet these requirements can be made.
