Colbert compiled the book exclusively for his own use and that of his household. The book represents an attempt at reading the whole of the Bible once in the year, a reduction of the length of the office to be recited daily, and a complete recitation of the Psalter once a week, presenting proper Psalms for a large number of saints days and other feasts. The author provides anthems at all the Hours as well as for the Vespers and Compline canticles, with separate anthems for every psalm at Mattins, Lauds, and Vespers on the great festivals. The book presents an entirely new arrangement of the Psalter, and attempts to follow the exact words of the Vulgate. The lessons at Mattins are not printed in the text but are to be read from a separately bound Bible using threads of silk placed in the book for that purpose. The lessons from the lives of Saints and for other festivals, as well as the patristic homilies on the Gospel of the day, are transferred to Prime, with the homily recited without a break. The book thus presents a unique and innovative approach to the Divine Office, reflecting the spirit of reform and innovation prevalent in the late 17th century.
