Elizabeth Bishop (1911-1979) was an American poet and short-story writer. She was Consultant in Poetry to the Library of Congress from 1949 to 1950, the Pulitzer Prize winner for Poetry in 1956, the National Book Award winner in 1970, and the recipient of the Neustadt International Prize for Literature in 1976. This book offers the a comprehensive portrayal of Elizabeth Bishop in mid-century America. The story of her national, cultural, ans literary politics during the World War II to Cold War period is brought into focus as the book traces her life and writing from the war years in Key West through her tenure as the 1949-1950 national poet laureate at the Library of Congress in Washington, DC. The book is bound in paperback form in the original card covers. It is in good condition with some shelf wear to the covers and fading to the spine. There is slight curling around the top rear corner and a mark from a removed price sticker on the rear cover. The contents are secure and clean although about eighty pages suffer from moderate to heavy foxing. There is no inscription.
