Washburne is a collection of letters and documents that chronicle the events of the Franco-German War of 1870-1871 and the subsequent insurrection of the Paris Commune. Washburne was the United States Minister to France at the time, and his correspondence provides a unique perspective on these historic events. The book begins with Washburne's observations on the outbreak of war between France and Prussia, including the initial French defeats and the eventual fall of Napoleon III. He then provides a detailed account of the siege of Paris, including the hardships faced by the city's inhabitants and the negotiations that led to the surrender of the French army. The second half of the book focuses on the Paris Commune, a socialist government that briefly controlled the city in the aftermath of the war. Washburne's correspondence provides a firsthand account of the violence and chaos that characterized the Commune's rule, as well as the efforts of the French government to suppress the rebellion.Throughout the book, Washburne's letters offer insights into the political and social climate of France during this tumultuous period. His correspondence also sheds light on the role of the United States in international affairs during the late 19th century.
