The manual was - much in line with typical National Socialist terminology -titled "Abwehr Englischer Gangster-methoden" or "Defence Against English Gangster methods". This book was compiled due the Wehrmacht intelligence operatives uncovering of a British hand-to-hand course for the SOE, Commandos, et al, on methods of quick and silent killing (undoubtedly developed by W. E. Fairbairn and E. A. Sykes). They correctly assessed that their troops in general and particularly the Geheime Staatspolizei (Gestapo), Sicherheitsdienst (SD), their security guards, and sentries would be in grave danger when confronted by men trained in these methods. This manual/program was the Wehrmacht's response. The manual states"These gangster methods are unnatural to the German soldier. Yet, we must adapt to them. Once attacked, one must defend oneself by the same means used by one's attacker.Once you have defended yourself against an attacker, there is only one goal: to incapacitate them as quickly as possible via counterattack. Students should note that many of these grapple-holds, etc., are difficult - if not impossible -to carry out when faced with a practised opponent.
