All of us in Vietnam knew there were advisers for most everything, but back then didn't think about it all that much. From 1945 to 1973, more than 100,000 members of the U.S. military were advisors in Vietnam. Of these, 66,399 were combat advisors. Eleven were awarded the Medal of Honor, 378 were killed and 1393 were wounded. Combat advisors lived and fought with South Vietnamese combat units, advising on tactics and weapons and liaising with local U.S. military support. Bob Worthington's first tour (1966-1967) began with training at the Army Special Warfare School in unconventional warfare, Vietnamese culture and customs, advisor responsibilities and Vietnamese language. He enlisted in the Marine Corps. He served in an Infantry battalion and saw combat in the Middle East in Operation Bluebat. He returned to Dartmouth and graduated as an Army ROTC Distinguished Military Graduate. Receiving orders to Vietnam as a combat advisor, he attended the JF Kennedy Special Warfare School at Ft Bragg, NC (for training in counter insurgency, counter guerilla, and unconventional warfare) and then the Defense Language Institute in CA for Vietnamese. He served in Vietnam as a combat advisor in 1966-1967 and as a combat advisor, again in 1968-1969. Worthington begins his story in the late 1950s when he was out of high school and not ready to handle college. So he enlisted in the Marines in early 1957. He takes us along on his adventures in boot camp and his release from the Marine Corps two years later to return to college. From the Marine Reserves he transferred to Army ROTC and then to active duty. Capt. Worthington worked with ARVN units in Da Nang, Hoi An, An Hoa. and other areas of I Corps. Worthington relates his experiences and reactions using little direct dialogue, opting instead for indirect quotes and attributions. He goes into detail about encounters with the NVA and VC, replying primarily on his daily journals and unit histories. The Vietnamese officers and personnel he worked with are well portrayed. His descriptions of riding on an O-1 Birddog and on board a fire mission with a Snoopy Gunship alone are worth the price of admission. Bob left active duty after Vietnam to attend graduate school at Northern Arizona University. Receiving his MA in Counseling and Psychology, he worked a year at NAU. The Army brought Bob back on active duty (as a student) to help it transition into an all-volunteer force when he entered the University of Utah Counseling Psychology Ph.D. program. Post-Ph.D., Bob was appointed Psychology Consultant for the Army Health Services Command, which managed all Army health care, health facilities and medical personnel in the U.S. Bob joined Operation Homecoming, a five-year DOD program following the adjustment of military Vietnam POWs and the Center for POW Studies where he headed the psychological evaluation of all army Vietnam POWs. He became a pioneer researcher on the adjustment of Vietnam veterans. Doing psychological research on the Army's Olympic Modern Pentathlon Team led to his becoming a sports psychologist for the team. Bob earned a master's degree in Business Administration fro.
