While the author laments the neglect that churches have faced in recent centuries, they also chronicle the integral role that churches and memorial spaces have played in English culture and history, especially during the 13th and 14th centuries when many of these structures were built. There are also many illustrations included to offer a deeper glimpse into the rich and varied history of English churches, and to illustrate the disrepair that many churches and burial grounds have endured in modern times.
