This book focuses on the profound influence that Crete, with its compelling history of intercultural exchange, had on the development of Apolloâs worship in Greece. The author demonstrates that Apollo adopted elements from the Cretan mother-goddess cult, such as the Omophagia, as well as ritualistic aspects like the Pythiaâs ecstatic inspiration at Delphi. This adoption of Cretan elements led to the hybridization and assimilation of deities and rituals, evident in the names and attributes of Apolloâs cult figures, such as Zeus, Leto, and the Muses. Through this assimilation, the book reveals Apollo's foundational roots in Aegean religion and provides captivating insights into the dynamic interplay of deities and cultures in ancient Greece.
