Selected international standards and industry practices are included for the sake of completeness. The standards covered include Federal Information Processing Standards, American National Standards, and international and industry standards. It aims to simplify design and procurement problems, as well as contribute to operational dependability and extend the useful life of networking arrangements. This book is directed at data processing equipment and operations as well as modems, concentrators, or transmission media while excluding control and information handling functions more closely associated with data processing procedures and system requirements. It provides a summary of standard link control disciplines, data flow, and message interchanges. The author emphasizes the importance of uniform definitions of necessary physical and logical interfaces among equipment and software components, with special attention paid to data codes and formats. The ultimate goal is to ensure accurate recovery of messages, packets, or any formatted collections of related characters, allowing them to be transferred in an orderly fashion among terminals on the network. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.…
