Wendell Berry, renowned agrarian author and essayist, once again reminds the reader of kinship, of soil and dust and hard earned character. His language is poetic but far from romantic, one moment biting like Flannery O'Conner, the next poignant like Annie Dillard. The members of his cast are certainly human, but more, they are iconographic, they are a warning and a response to previous warnings 'Spare us, O Lord, the logical consequences of our folly.' Our protagonist, Andy Catlett, (formerly written of in Berry's well loved series surrounding Port William) and here found alone in San Francisco as an agricultural journalist invited to an academic conference, is often found 'remembering' on behalf of others.
