The war helped Florida move past its southern conservative mentality and emerge as a sophisticated society, and thousands of military men were trained under Florida's sunny skies. Here are stories from some of the one hundred military bases, including Tyndall Field, where Clark Gable trained, and Eglin Air Force Base, where Doolittle planned his raid on Tokyo. Read about Camp Gordon Johnston, referred to as "Hell by the Sea," built in a swampy, snake-infested subtropical jungle, and uncover the secrets of "Station J," a base that monitored the transmissions of German U-boats prowling off the coast. This fascinating collaboration between historians Nick Wynne and Richard Moorhead reveals the lasting impact of World War II on Florida as the United States heads into the seventieth anniversary of its entry into the war. He served overseas in Asmara, Eritrea, Ethiopia. He received his Bachelor of Science in Education in 1969, a Master's Degree in History in 1970 and his doctorate in 1980 from the University of Georgia. He taught at Southern Technical Institute (now Southern Polytechnic State University) from 1970 until 1980. He taught at the University of South Alabama for two years and then taught at the University of South Florida. In 1987, he became the Executive Director of the Florida Historical Society and retired from that position in July 2008. This fascinating collaboration between historians Nick Wynne and Richard Moorhead reveals the lasting impact of World War II on Florida as the United States heads into the seventieth anniversary of its entry into the war. When millions of Americans were drafted to serve in Europe and the Pacific during World War II, most were leaving their homes in cities, in small towns and on farms for the first time. Their destiny was to participate in a worldwide conflict, the magnitude of which had never before been seen. The majority of them would return home, though more than 290,000 would not. But before most of them embarked on the greatest adventure of their lives, they came to Florida. During the buildup and through the end of World War II, over a million soldiers, sailors, airmen, shipbuilders, laborers and volunteers called Florida their temporary home. The vital role the state played in the war, and the consequences that were felt long after, are detailed in a new book by historians Nick Wynne and Richard Moorhead: Florida in World War II Floating Fortress.
