SB. xvl + 583 pp FRENCH TEXT BW Published in Paris by Hachette in 1915 to mark the centenary of the Waterloo campaign, Edmond Lenient's La Solution des à nigmes de Waterloo: Ãtudes historiques et stratà giques is a penetrating French study of Napoleon's final campaign and the enduring controversies surrounding his defeat.Rather than simply retelling the familiar events of June 1815, Lenient approaches the campaign as a series of strategic and tactical problems requiring careful examination. Drawing upon the substantial nineteenth-century literature on Waterloo, he considers the decisions, movements and misunderstandings that shaped the fighting at Ligny, Quatre Bras and Waterloo, assessing how opportunities were created, lost or misunderstood during four extraordinary days of campaigning.Of particular importance is Lenient's examination of one of the campaign's most intriguing controversies: the mysterious pencil-written order associated with the movements of Count d'Erlon's I Corps on 16 June. D'Erlon's troops spent crucial hours marching between Ligny and Quatre Bras without making a decisive contribution to either battle. Their absence has consequently become one of the great 'what ifs' of Napoleonic military history. Lenient advances a carefully reasoned explanation for the episode, seeking to establish how the confusion arose and what effect it had upon Napoleon's prospects of achieving a more complete victory over the Prussians at Ligny.Written from a French perspective a century after the battle, this is both a fascinating period study and a valuable contribution to the historiography of Waterloo. For students of Napoleon, Wellington and the campaign of 1815, Lenient's analysis offers an opportunity to explore the strategic uncertainties, disputed orders and command decisions behind one of history's most intensively studied battles.FRENCH TEXT.
