It introduced a rigourous programme of instruction, including intensive two-week courses for officers and enlisted men, with emphasis on effective cutting, correct grip and defensive parries. Practical training employed aids such as the 'edge post' and 'running at the ring'. Developed from Le Marchant's observations of poor sword handling and cavalry casualties during the Flanders campaign, the system proved highly effective during the Napoleonic Wars, notably at Campo Mayor and Fuentes de Oñoro.
