"To today's novel reader, with one foot irrevocably planted in the 21st century, reflection on the origin(s) of the novel is considerably more complicated than it was in the earlier part of the 20th century. Questions of origin are also more fraught than they were for postwar critics of the 1950s such as Ian Watt and Richard Chase. As Homer Brown notes, "What is clear is that the linear history of the novel as having an "origin" and "rise," the history we have been brought up on, with its genealogies, lines of descent and influence, family resemblances, is itself a fictional narrative - a kind of novel about the novel." He views the shifting critical responses to such "canonical" authors as Defoe, for example, as an allegory for the shifting definitions of the novel over several centuries. "The Development of the Novel: Sources and Documents" aims largely to reflect the historical trajectory of the English language novel, rather than the revisionary history of the transnational novel of which Doody, Lynch and Warner and Rushdie speak.;Instead, this collection attempts to reflect the decades, even centuries, of debates about the origin, genre and goals of the novel, granting equal space to both writers and critics over nearly three centuries. The material is divided into sections for easy reference and each piece is prefaced by an explanatory paragraph by the editor explaining its importance. Volume I looks at the origins of the novel from Cervantes to Austen and finishes with a section on the 19th century development in Europe. Volume II concentrates on the 19th century in the English tradition (Scott to James) and ends with 2 sections on the development of the novel in America. Volume III concentrates on the 20th century and is divided into 2 sections: 1900-1950 and then from 1950 to the present." Books are in mint condition in the original box which has light shelf wear. hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. Most of our very good books have only minor imperfections such as shelf wear consistent with a new book that's sat on a bookshop shelf for a year or two. Occasionally we may miss other minor imperfections as we have to grade books at speed. Our books are dispatched from a Yorkshire former cotton mill. We list via barcode/ISBN so please note that the images are stock images and may not be the exact copy you receive, furthermore the details about edition and year might not be accurate as many publishers reuse the same ISBN for multiple editions and as we simply scan a barcode or enter an ISBN we do not check the validity of the edition data when listing. If you're looking for an exact edition please don't order (at least not without checking with us first, although we don't always have time to check). We aim to dispatch prompty, the service used will depend on order value and book size. We can ship to most countries, see our shipping policies. Payment is via Abe only.…

3 vols, rexine, 8vo, 25 cm, xiv, 626 + vii, 608 + viii, 712 pp. A three-volume collection of writings on the development of the novel. The set comprises: Vol. 1. Origins through the eighteenth century: beginnings: Cervantes to Austen; Vol. 2. The nineteenth-century novel : the English novel: Scott to James; Vol. 3. The twentieth-century novel. From the editor's introduction - "In choosing the chapters and essays, beginning with the statements of the early novelists in volume one and concluding with contemporary critics in volume three, I have had two principal aims: (1) To represent chronologically the rise of the novel - primarily, though by no means exclusively, in Britain and the United States, and (2) To capture the dialectical debates by both critics and writers on the nature of the genre. Debates over realism versus romance and ethical versus the aesthetic dominate all three volumes. In addition to collecting both well-known and more obscure pieces by writers and critics, I felt it imperative to anthologize a number of significant theoretical essays. Specifically, I attempted to represent several of the various theoretical schools from the Marxist writings of Georg Lukács and Raymond Williams, to the poststructuralist work of Roland Barthes to the theories of narrative of M. M. Bakhtin, Tzvetan Todorov and Gerard Genette. These theorists, largely from France or Eastern Europe, reflect a heightened awareness of linguistics and narrative structure, an awareness generally less pronounced in England and the United States where interest has been dominated by questions of ethics and aesthetics."
