Un monde où chacun répétait les gestes qu'on lui avait appris; où l'on invoquait les saints pour obtenir la clémence des saison…s; où, si la nature n'avait pas été trop capricieuse, on mangeait du pain bis (du pain de méteil) et l'on buvait le petit vin de sa vigne. Le calendrier des travaux des champs semblait fixé pour toujours: on semait les haricots à la Saint-Eutrope pour en récolter ' plein une hotte ' et le battage des grains au fléau occupait les longs mois d'hiver. Les forêts offraient alors toutes sortes de ressources que nous avons oubliées: outre le bois, et le charbon de bois, on allait y chercher des échalas pour les vignes, du fourrage pour les bêtes, des faines dont on faisait de l'huile, des fruits sauvages, ou encore d'innombrables simples, sans oublier la souche de Noël, ancêtre de notre bûche, qui restait allumée pendant les fêtes. Leurs cendres, disait-on, avaient de multiples usages: elles chassaient les limaces, écartaient les renards du poulailler, guérissaient les bêtes malades, protégeaient de la foudre. Marcel Lachiver, petit-fils de paysans, ancien instituteur, est professeur d'université. Il est l'auteur du Dictionnaire du monde rural, les mots du passé et de nombreux livres d'histoire dont Vins, vignes et vignerons.
