As a significant medieval witness to Christine's de Pizan reception in the German-speaking world, the translation - which was transmitted indi…vidually and was probably written in Bern in the second half of the fifteenth century - is the special focus of this volume. ; Christine de Pizan (1364/65 - um 1430), Tochter eines Bologneser Arztes und Astrologen (seit 1368 am französischen Königshof), verfolgte mit ihren zahlreichen vielbeachteten zeitkritischen und gleichzeitig historisch, theologisch und philosophisch fundierten Schriften politische und pädagogische Ziele. Ihr einziges zeitgenössisch auch ins Deutsche übersetztes Werk, 'Le Livre de fais d'armes et de chevalerie' (um 1410), sollte als ein Handbuch in strategischen und juristischen Fragen während des Hundertjährigen Krieges gegen England dienen. Die 1450 - 1475 in Bern hergestellte deutsche (alemannische) Übersetzung mit ihren Erörterungen kriegstechnischer und kriegsrechtlicher Fragen erfolgte im Interesse der hochgerüsteten Stadt für ihre militärischen Auseinandersetzungen mit Zürich und Österreich einerseits und Burgund andererseits. Nicht Problemdiskussionen, sondern allgemein verständliche praktische Anleitungen werden geboten unter häufiger Berufung auf Vegetius' 'Epitoma Rei Militaris' (4. Jh. n. Chr.) und unter Verwendung der 'Arbre des batailles' von Honorat Bovet (14. Jh.). Der Einsatz literarischer Mittel wie die Belehrung der Schülerin Christine durch den Meister im dritten und vierten Teil steht beispielhaft für literarisch geformtes Fachschrifttum. Die erst 1995 identifizierte Handschrift der deutschen Übersetzung wird synoptisch mit der etwa 1410 entstandenen mittelfranzösischen Pariser Handschrift BnF f. fr. 603 abgedruckt, die als von Christine selbst hergestellt gilt. Außerdem wird Bezug genommen auf die englische Übersetzung von William Caxton 1489 (ed. 1932). Die Ausgabe bietet einen weiteren Textzeugen für den regen spätmittelalterlichen Kulturtransfer, besonders den französisch-deutschen und wendet sich - auch mit ihren kodikologischen, literatur- und sprachgeschichtlichen Abhandlungen, mit einem Wort- und Namenverzeichnis und der Bibliographie - an Germanisten, Romanisten, Historiker, Kulturwissenschaftler, Rechtshistoriker.
